Infections Q & A

What are infections?

More than 15 million people visit their doctor every year for an infection, which occurs when a virus, bacteria, fungus, or parasite enters your body and makes you sick. Infections spread through people, contaminated food or water, and insects.

The severity of the infection may depend on the type of germ responsible for your illness, but some infections require medical intervention.

What are infection symptoms?

Infection symptoms can vary in type and severity based on the cause of the infection and your overall health. Common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Some infections may develop without causing symptoms, such as human papillomavirus (HPV). The team at Family Care & Wellness may screen for these infections during your annual physical exam.

What types of infections benefit from a doctor’s visit?

The family medicine specialists at Family Care & Wellness can manage any infection. Some of the most common infections the team treats at the office include:

  • Common cold
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Sinus infection
  • Earache
  • Flu
  • Strep throat
  • Skin infection
  • Abscess

Though you may be able to manage some of these infections with at-home care, you should schedule an appointment at Family Care & Wellness if your symptoms don’t improve or get worse, if you have a high fever or severe headache, or if you’re having difficulty breathing. You should also see the doctors at Family Care & Wellness any time you have an unexplained skin rash.

What can I expect during treatment for my infection?

You can expect a comprehensive evaluation from the team at Family Care & Wellness when you come to the office seeking help for an infection. The team takes a patient-centered approach to care and asks detailed questions to review your whole health, not just your symptoms.

To determine the cause of your infection, the team may request lab work, such as a cheek swab, blood test, or urinalysis. Based on the cause of your infection, the team develops your treatment plan, which may include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Antiviral (if available and/or appropriate)
  • Activity modification
  • Medication to alleviate symptoms

The team may have you return to the office within a few days to monitor your response to the recommended treatment and adjust your plan as needed.

If you suspect you have an infection, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or strep throat, call Family Care & Wellness to schedule an appointment so you can get the treatment you need.
